Isn’t That The Limit!
My grandmother used this phrase anytime she wanted to comment on something, using different inflections to convey her feelings. When I would arrive at her house she would lovingly hold both of my hands in hers, squeezing them while saying, “Look how you’ve grown…isn’t that the limit!” If someone cut her off in traffic she would shake her head, narrow her eyes and mutter, “Isn’t that the limit.”
I spent many long weekends at her house. She loved cooking, baking and generally making things beautiful. I was her enthusiastic sidekick and her neverending belief in my creative abilities was often emphasized with a positive, “Isn’t that the limit!” Holiday dinners with the extended family meant getting out the good china, polishing the silver, laying an elaborate table with the best linens and artfully arranged fresh flowers and then serving the most current, gourmet dishes available at the time.
Her house was a magical, beautiful place and she made sure I always felt like I had helped to make it that way. She followed the latest trends and adventurously tried new recipes and techniques, including me on her journey. She instilled in me curiosity and a belief that I could do anything I set my mind to…basically a formula for a limitless life.
I have always loved being in the kitchen and making my home a beautiful space. Cooking delicious meals and sharing them with family and friends gives me great joy and satisfaction. Because I love to cook for other people (most of whom aren’t vegan), it is important to me to have delicious vegan dishes that everyone will love. Equally important is that the food is elegant and beautiful. I can just hear my grandmother saying, with equal parts incredulity and approval, “Isn’t that the limit!?!”
